Kantishna Roadhouse Named One of TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2024

Kantishna Roadhouse, the only Indigenous-owned and operated lodge within Denali National Park, has been recognized as one of TIME’s World’s Greatest Places for 2024. This honor highlights the lodge’s resilience and innovation in the face of significant challenges.

In August 2021, the Pretty Rocks Landslide severed the Denali Park Road at mile 43, isolating Kantishna Roadhouse and other backcountry lodges. In response, the 32-cabin lodge transitioned to a fly-in-only model, offering guests an exclusive and immersive Alaskan wilderness experience. Activities include gold panning in Moose Creek, nature hikes, and a new fly-in day trip that features a scenic flight over the Alaska Range and Mount Denali, exploration of historic buildings, and lunch at the lodge.

Despite the logistical challenges and increased operational costs, the reduced visitor numbers have enhanced the exclusivity of the experience. Guests often find themselves alone in the vast backcountry, enjoying solitude at iconic sites like Wonder Lake.

The road closure is expected to remain in place through at least 2026, but Kantishna Roadhouse continues to adapt and provide unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences for its visitors.
